Wow! I hadn't even thought this far ahead! Thanks Linden! If you go to geocaching.com and use the key word search and use the word separation you can track the progress.

Here's a preview of a few of the 200+ seed pods to be given away Friday night, 5/26/06: We counted 12,112 seed caches loaded and ready to go!

I want to make sure that this project complies with all cache listing guidelines. I would hope to get at least a few reviewers to participate here to better facilitate folks getting their caches approved. Here are some recent questions from a reviewer: 1) Is the finder obligated to place a seed cache if he finds the cache, ie. is it a requirement to hide a cache to log a smilie? The concern being that newbies would be forced to place it in a doubtful place because they felt they needed to. No. No one is obligated to do anything, but sign the log of the cache they found.2) Two follow-up questions related to time and options. Could a newbie who did not feel they could yet contribute to our sport with a meaningful hide defer the hide, and/or could someone just log a find w/o taking a seed cache. Certainly. They achieve One Degree of Separation simply by logging the cache they find.3) Does the provided micro have to be used for the seed cache? Not at all. We are EXPECTING 50% to as much as 80% attrition. If you look at the GC.com MapQuest map of Georgia for any cache and zoom out one click you'll see that the nothern third of the state is Chattahoochee National Forest (green on the map). The USFS does not allow microcaches in that area, so apart from the urban areas you'd need an ammo can or tupperware container. Can that be used in place of the provided micro? Most certainly if the hider wishes to do that to participate.4) What happens when the seed caches run out? That is up to the owner of the cache. The log documents are available on request and micro containers can be obtained FREE at any film processing business. Are there enough to sustain the minimum of 90 days required under the cache permanence guideline? Since this is subjective to placement location traffic, that is uncertain, but in most cases Yes.Will the cache be refilled, or will it then become a normal cache, since we can't have temporary caches? The caches are meant to be permanent. It is up to the owner as to how long they wish to participate. AGAIN, ODS Seed Pod & Micro Seed Cache forms are available upon request. Thanks very much to the reviewer who took the time to ask these questions. If any other reviewer has a different question or concern, you can contact me privately, or post right here.

Please use the following information as the short description template:
This cache was hidden as part of the One Degree of Separation Geocaching Project. This is a seed that came from: (give cache listing).
Please use the following information as the long description template: (You can add your own material too, but please use the template too.)
This project was launched to unite the entire geocaching continuum together at one point using the "Small World Theory" as it pertains to geocaching.
If even half of the nearly 13,000 caches originally released on 5/26/2006 get placed as a geocache, no geocacher in the entire world (with even 1 find) should be able to go much beyond 3 degrees of separation from every other geocacher in the world, but the REAL object of this project is to bring that number down to 1 degree for as many geocachers as possible.
One Degree of Separation is a project that has been taking shape and GROWING for nearly 3 years. It's a variation of the "Small World" concept that was proposed in the early 20th century. Many people are familiar with the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game, but few know just how far back the idea goes.
For more information on this project and the Small World Theory go to: (visit link)
To visually see how the project grows over time check the ODS: PRIME! geocaching profile stats at: (visit link) Please email ODS: PRIME! when you plant your seed, so he can add your cache to the ever growing network of caches placed in this project.
Many other goals will be posted as the project grows, but here are a few.
#1 To have an active ODS cache hidden on ALL 7 continents. #2 To have an ODS cache hidden in all 50 states. #3 To have an ODS cache hidden in a number of foriegn countries, by milestone, 10 countries at a time. First milestone 10 then 20 and so on. #4 To have an ODS cache hidden in every county in Texas.
More goals will be posted on the ODS website....
Thank you for participating in what is sure to be a noteworthy point in geocaching history.

The "links" in this template don't work here, can you please provide the URL's to them so that I can get them to work in my listing? The ODS Prime link to the profile is easy enough but the link to "more information about this project and the Small World Theory" would be useful so that I'm certain it'll take them where you are wanting them to go. Muddawber has already ran into a snag with our reviewer here in Idaho. He didn't like the way the template was worded, he felt that the seeker was required to take a seed container in order to log the cache as found. The reviewer asked Muddawber to add wording stating that the seeker doesn't have to participate and that they can simply sign the log. Thank you for that info. I modified the template with: There is no obligation to participate. Just sign the log if that's as far as you want to go.....

ALL ODS Seed Pod hiders, please use the following information as the short description template:
This cache was hidden as part of the One Degree of Separation Geocaching Project. This is a seed cache, meaning you are meant to take one of the ready made micro caches inside of it and hide it yourself. No trading is required. Just come take a cache and hide it using the proper title format and utilizing the seed cache template that you will find at the project website or at the bottom of this page. There is no obligation to participate. Just sign the log if that's as far as you want to go.....

Can I make a seed pod from the seed I picked up! I've been thinking long and hard on this question and the answer is "Yes." It is in keeping with the spirit of the project, so why not? I'm ONLY expecting about 20% participation on the 13,000 caches already released and I'm not the least bit anal so certainly go ahead. If that's how you want to participate then GREAT. I'm still making and releasing pods as materials become available to me anyway.... I will eat a bug if the number of caches placed in this project ever tops 13,000 caches. *crosses fingers behind back*

"2. Adopt and hide a seed pod from an official One Degree of Separation event." Are there any in the St.Louis Missouri area? Will there be an event where we can pick up a cache in the St.Louis area? I would like to help out with this it looks like a cool idea. Thanks Tim Hi! Thanks for your positive response. It took over 500 man hours and between $500-$600 to prepare the 300 seed pods and 12,500+ seeds from three years worth of materials gathering. I doubt we'll see another ODS event happen, but I won't rule it out. There are resources like freecycle.com and government surplus bidding on cheap lots of ammo cans that could make another branch of this project take off, but sadly, the Snoogstress would probably disown me if I were to try such an undertaking again. I would certainly sanction another group to try if I was approached. The more the merrier. The heart of this project is community building and the goal is to have the majority of Geocachers just One degree from the next anywhere in the world.

Is there a "Standard" format for the cache page. Yes, everyone will use waypoint GCVR2F (One Degree of Separation: ODS PRIME!) as a basic template when it is activated on 5/26. You can add anything else you like after you cut and paste the template. Also can it be any type of cache? ie. Traditional, Multi, or Puzzle? I would hope that they are hidden in all forms and on ALL geocache listing sites.

In order to play you must complete any of the following:
1. Attend an official One Degree of Separation event.
2. Adopt and hide a seed pod from an official One Degree of Separation event.
To properly hide a seed pod you MUST use its given adoption name and link the cache page to this message board by putting the web address of this board in the blank for "users webpage."
3. Find and log a hidden seed pod.
4. Hide a micro seed cache that you get from a seed pod.
To properly hide a micro seed cache you MUST name it "One Degree of Separation: (your username)" or "One Degree: (your username)" and link the cache page to this message board by putting the web address of this board in the blank for "users webpage." Please mention the seed pod that you took your seed cache from on the cache page.
5. Find and log a micro seed cache.
Everyone who finds one of these caches will be at one degree of separation from every other geocacher who logs a cache that originated from this project.
